Visa and arrival

The X1 visa, the JW form that comes with your admission notice, and the residence permit you apply for within 30 days of entering China.

  1. A degree programme means an X1 visa

    The X1 visa is issued for long-term study, which the regulations define as more than 180 days.

  2. The visa needs the admission notice and the JW form

    An X1 applicant submits the admission notice and certification documents from the competent authority. Form JW201 serves government scholarship students and form JW202 serves self-funded students; the school or the China Scholarship Council issues it.

  3. Residence permit within 30 days of entry

    Where the visa says a residence permit is required, apply within 30 days from the date of entry to the exit-entry administration of the public security organ in the place you will live.

  4. Health certificate for a permit longer than one year

    An application for a residence permit valid for more than one year needs a health certificate, which is valid for six months from its date of issue. At enrolment the university also has the Foreigner Physical Examination Record confirmed or arranges an examination.

  5. Register your address within 24 hours

    If you live anywhere other than a hotel, you or your host register with the local public security organ within 24 hours of arrival.

  6. Off-campus internships need an endorsement

    A holder of a residence permit for study needs the university's approval and an endorsement on the permit, stating place and period, before any off-campus work-study or internship.
